The torture scene in the original Metal Gear Solid is one of the most iconic scenes in video game history.

There is a lot to unpack about it, with its fourth-wall breaks and anti-cheat system hinted at by Ocelot’s famous “auto-fire” line, which is why it’s easy to forget that there are also two radically different endings that you get for either failing or succeeding during the interrogation.

And two radically different rewards.

After Snake is captured by Ocelot, his captor explains that at any time during the torture he may choose to give up, but by doing so Snake will give Ocelot the green light to kill his partner, Meryl.

If you successfully resist the torture, you will reach the ending where you and Meryl escape the compound, where she gives you an infinite ammo bandana as a reward.

However, if you listen to Ocelot’s advice and surrender, the man will indeed kill Meryl, and in the ending, you will escape with your nerdy buddy, Otacon.

Now, you’d think that this would mean you don’t get any reward, but in reality Otacon gives you an equally amazing reward as Meryl in the form of his special stealth camo that renders you fully invisible.
