7. Many Extra Levels - Sonic The Hedgehog 2
After the monumental success of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega got to work on a sequel that was designed to be bigger and better in every way. And boy, did they deliver, since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 allowed Sonic and his new buddy Tails to venture through 11 innovative zones, almost twice the amount as its predecessor.
Despite the fact Sonic 2 was brimming with material, prototype ROMs and archival materials prove the beloved sequel was intended to have far more levels.
Wood Zone was going to be the second stage but was repurposed into Sonic & Knuckles' Mushroom Hill Zone. Two desert-themed levels were designed, Dust Hill Zone and Sand Shower Zone, before getting canned. An industrial area called Genocide City Zone was also considered as well as a water-themed region called Ocean Wind Zone, and a futuristic landscape called Cyber City.
The most interesting of the lot has to be Hidden Palace Zone, which would've explained the origin of the Chaos Emeralds and allowed our speedy hero to turn into Super Sonic. Though this level was cut, it was restored in the 2013 remaster.
Although some levels can be accessed through unconventional means, they range from glitchy to unplayable.
