2. The Original Ending - Halo 2

Breath of the Wild Minish

Despite the praise Halo 2 received, the cliffhanger ending attracted the ire of many. After fighting through Covenant forces, Master Chief boards the Prophet of Truth's vessel in order to "finish the fight". With no warning, the screen cuts to black, leaving the battle for Earth unresolved.

But at one point, Halo 2 was supposed to have a definitive ending. Master Chief was meant to return to Earth and lead a full-scale assault on the Truth's forces. Players would fight a climactic mission in New Mombasa, including large-scale battles between the UNSC, The Covenant, and The Flood. Though the Covenant is at odds with humanity, their leader, The Arbiter, would join forces with MC during the final mission.

The main campaign would wrap up with a showdown against the Prophet of Truth, setting up Halo 3 more cleanly. Though the Truth escapes, this version of Halo 2 would've had far more resolution since it doesn't abruptly end in mid-mission.

Although several elements made their way into the follow-up, it's a wonder how things would've turned out if Halo 2 stuck with the original idea and how this would've impacted the next game in the series.
