2018's Biggest Video Game Protagonists - Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Madeline (Celeste)

Celeste is a game that struck a chord with many not only for its ludicrously difficult yet highly addictive platforming, but also its frank and empathetic depiction of mental illness.

This is embodied through the protagonist, Madeline, who attempts to climb Celeste Mountain while facing off against insurmountable obstacles which serve as a potent metaphor for the overwhelming struggles of both depression and anxiety.

Without going into too much detail, parts of the game literally involve Madeline battling an externalised version of herself, with the game serving as a reminder for beleaguered players to love themselves as much as they can.

Do video game heroes get more sympathetic and easy-to-root-for than that? If you've ever struggled with being your best you, Celeste is an absolute must-play.
