21 Best Character Debuts In Gaming History

9. Kratos (God Of War)

"The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me" Through a slew of promotional trailers and gameplay teasers alluding to a playable monster of a man more manly than Chuck Norris driving a monster truck while gnawing on a pile of steaks, what we were actually presented with when hitting the 'Start' button and watching the menus fade away to reveal the model of Kratos behind, was a surprisingly self-reflective and sombre affair. In a very popular narrative move where we start at the end and work back over, the assumedly juggernaut-powered Kratos actually flings himself off the cliff and into the abyss, hitting the rocks below before we actually revert to ripping enemies in a way that would go on to define the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI5z93eTuKw For such a brutal character that over the course of the series would essentially become a cypher for all-out nihilistic rage (particularly in part three), the way Kratos was introduced to us all gave him a surprising amount of narrative drive... that was before we got to ripping out some Hydra eyeballs anyway.
