30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

17. Pokémon Yellow

The years have not been kind to the Pokemon games. Not that they haven't aged well, far from it - just that aside from having a newer lick of paint thrown on them every year, there's not been a whole lot in the way of innovation either. Like so many other annual/regular franchises from Call of Duty to Assassin's Creed and even the likes of Harvest Moon, once a particular winning formula has been perfected, it's off to the races and no looking back to notice the competition. As you'll obviously be able to obviously see, the Pokemon game of choice that encapsulates everything that was phenomenal about the trend - from TV shows to movies and back to games - is the Pikachu-fronted Pokemon Yellow; but feel free to substitute your own favourite colour into the slot. All the games share that nature of capturing your own private animal-army, but it was Yellow that mimicked the TV show we all held so dear, giving us a small interact-able Pikachu whose mood we could check in on whenever we liked, as well as giving Team Rocket a good kicking. Sure Red and Blue kicked things off in a way that's maybe more accessible to newcomers to the series, but Yellow was the one that was the heart of the franchise incarnate before the numbers exploded into the multi-hundreds and all the nineties kids lost track.
