30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

16. Shadow Of The Colossus

A slightly divisive game for some based purely on the repetitive nature of the gameplay i.e. the fact that when you boil it down 'all you do' in Shadow is traipse from a temple to a large beast, and kill it; repeating that 16 times. However to be as redundant as that would be to entirely miss the point, and that of just how sumptuously beautiful the world around you is here - not to mention a completely unparalleled sense of scale that hits you square in the gut every time you finally come across the enemy Colossus you're going to at least attempt to take down. From towering Godzilla-sized beasts that move with immense weight and grace on land to gigantic multi-winged creatures with various textures you can grab ahold of to get some footing before taking off along with them, to even an intense underwater battle against one electrified Colossi where you're not just holding on for dear life, but also keeping an eye on your oxygen meter too. Needless to say the overall experience within SotC has gone down in the history for all reasons that make the core gameplay of 'tiny man takes on big thing' so perfect - and that's not even going into the narrative of exactly why you're doing these things, and how it factors into develop Team Ico's other work, which is extremely rewarding for fans in itself.
