30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

15. Halo 2

The game that proved shooting on consoles could not only be a 'thing', but also a world-changing gambit that has been paying off in bigger dividends every year since. Halo 3 or Reach might have been the slightly more obvious choices being they're what rounded up Bungie's work on the series before they took off to make Halo: Rebooted (or Destiny if we're being honest), but it was with Halo 2 that Xbox Live suddenly became the best invention man had created since the football, and every gamer capable of taking up arms (in the form of bulky Microsoft controllers) was online blasting each others hips off with any number of laser-based weapons and explosives. That's not to mention the fantastic campaign mode that - yes, we've all had a little rant about after the ending, but that didn't effect much really - was brilliant, bringing in the playable Covenant Arbiter who went on to have a brilliant presence throughout the game and its sequels. Halo's another one of those games where personal favourite entries are solidified and lost based on the tiniest of increments, but it was with this second instalment - and the birth of online console multiplayer - that Bungie delivered one for the history books.
