30 Greatest Video Games Of All Time

14. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

That being said, that page seemingly reserved for Master Chief and his "Wort-wort"-spouting midgets would soon be followed up by the 'other type' of online shooter - the military kind. And boy were we blown away by how much we forgot how incredibly fun lining up headshot after headshot could be. Not since Counter-Strike had the idea of speccing weapons and load-outs been so laboured over, with the tiniest modification to a rifle's scope type making all the difference when it came to blasting your opponents online. Although it would be Modern Warfare 2 that would put the single player campaign on the map for reasons that dabbled more in controversy than spectacle, what was featured here was a Michael Bay-esque romp through a variety of explosion-filled scenarios, our eyes bulging with pure digitally-injected adrenaline the whole time through. Of course the COD series has gone on to become the most talked-about in the online realm, eclipsing even the former entry on this list, and chances are if you mention to anyone the reason they're either way into - or vehemently opposed - to online gaming, it'll be because of their time with this game. From the game-changing proliferation of class-based warfare applied to the militaristic aesthetic through to each match running the gamut from one-on-one standoffs to calling in missile drones on enemy bases thanks to the robust 'Perks' system - and even the inclusion of a Kill-Cam so you could hunt down the last person who took you down - COD 4 changed everything.
