5 Great (And 5 Not So Great) Stealth Video Games

2. Mission: Impossible

Despite 1998 being a great year for stealth games, this was not one of them.

Much like GoldenEye, released the year before, the M:I game served as a sort of retelling/reimagining of the film. Set as third person stealth adventure, we play as Ethan Hunt as he tries to stop the leaking of agency information and discover the mole in the IMF group.

Issues behind the scenes saw a production marred with problems from the start, as movie rights and Tom Cruise's ego saw changes in story and Hunt's look, respectively. Whilst still a commercial success, it didn't fair well critically.

It had some highlights, though. The suspension room scene was handled well, as was the train station encounter with the operative known as Max, but a few diamonds in an otherwise rough game couldn't hold it up, and it fell by the wayside.

Comparisons to GoldenEye, Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid were unfavourable, causing the series to sit back until the release of Operation Surma in 2003. Again, it couldn't hold a candle to similar games of the time, proving that it really was an impossible mission to make their own dent in the market.
