Hopping in a sloop and playing by yourself is an option and can be rewarding to those willing to put the time in. However, it's an uphill battle and you'll need to be able to handle yourself in PVP to even stand a chance. Playing with friends though, it becomes much easier and frankly more enjoyable... which is sort of the point.

The game's matchmaking system makes it easy to join and play with others too, and means there's little effort involved in doing so.

There're out right advantages to playing with others in Sea Of Thieves too: more cannons, bigger/faster ships, less carrying loot to and from beaches, possible revives and laughs, lots and lots of laughs.

Getting drunk, having loud and explosive ship battles, dying in boobytrapped vaults... it's all just more fun with others.

Or conversely you may end up fishing for keys to chests... you're going to want to bring a friend for that.

Seriously though, it's difficult to think of a game that's been more fun to play with friends this whole console generation.
