4. The Incredible Art Direction

Say what you want about any suspect gameplay elements, but sweet baby Jesus, this is a gorgeous-looking game. It's not so much the quality of the graphics as it is the incredible art direction that makes No Man's Sky so beautiful to observe.

From the sheer diversity of the planets to how ably it conveys the seemingly infinite vastness of space, the game may not boast production values to match something like Uncharted 4, but what it does it does incredibly well.

Given that this is a game people will likely be playing for a long, long time, it was vital that its aesthetics would endure for the future, and that certainly seems likely to be the case.
