6. Majora's Mask - The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask
There's no doubt in anyone's mind that Nintendo's sequel to the revolutionary Ocarina Of Time took many different turns to distinguish itself from its predecessor. While retaining the same engine and, to an extent, same character models, Majora's Mask differed from both past and future Zelda titles by exploring a very dark and morose story involving themes of genocide and friendship. Throughout the game we have everyone's favorite hero Link (Young Link to be exact) travelling to many parts of the overworld to free the four giants who will stop the moon from colliding with Termina Town. Guarding the giants are four dungeon bosses who range from a mechanical bull to a giant fish. While they are special in a way, none reaches the heights of the game's final boss; the eponymous Majora's Mask. What makes the Majora's Mask boss fight stand out amongst the numerous bosses in gaming history are several factors. The first is the fact that the battle itself is strange in that it's both a psychedelic and physical encounter. To explain, right before entering the rainbow colored room, you meet the Skull Kid who asks you if you're ready to play with him before transporting you to the aforementioned room. This is strange in that it introduces the question of whether or not the fight is in the Skull Kid's head or merely Majora's magic at work. Secondly is the fight itself, wherein you have to not just clash with the evil Mask, but all the other required masks you're made to collect during your journey. Lastly are the many different forms the Mask takes in an attempt to destroy you and the screams it emits as you hack away at its health. Needless to say, Majora's Mask proved to be a unique end to a unique game.
Red Stewart is big fan of the entertainment industry, with insights into film, television, and video games for starters. Despite growing up in the 21st century's era of modernization, he prefers many retro era ideas over the current trends found in many of today's media. Personally he's an introvert who loves reading as much as gaming.
