8 AMAZING Box-Arts That Made You Buy BAD Games

5. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero

The Mortal Kombat franchise was of course one of the most popular video game IP of the 1990s, and in 1997 Midway delivered the fighting series' first spin-off entry, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.

And let's be real here - if you walked into a games store and saw the cover, touting the brilliantly effective, minimalist visual of the iced-over Mortal Kombat logo, how could any fan not be intrigued?

A Sub Zero-led Mortal Kombat game? What's not to like?

Everything, as it turns out, because as the many suckered into buying this thing by some nifty key art soon discovered, it's less a conventional fighting game than a temple-crawling action-adventure title - and a coma-inducingly dull one at that.

That's without even getting into the hilariously low-budget FMV sequences, which at least offered a brief measure of charm compared to the rote side-scrolling gameplay.

Despite its awesome cover, Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero proved enough of a critical and commercial flop that it thankfully scared Midway off from producing any other spin-offs under the Mythologies umbrella.
