8 Bold Predictions For Nintendo At E3 2016

2. There's More To Paper Mario: Color Splash Than Meets The Eye

Upon the reveal of Paper Mario: Color Splash for the Wii U during a recent Nintendo Direct, many fans were shocked and disappointed to see the game appearing to continue the company's new approach to games in the series, stripping away many core RPG elements in favour of simplified gameplay and an attempt to be more €œaction-adventure€ orientated instead. Colour Splash follows Paper Mario: Sticker Star for the Nintendo 3DS, a game reviled by many fans and which received the lowest review scores in the franchise's history. Yet not very much about the game was actually shown... and that's something which many fans are taking for granted. Despite the appearance of a similar combat system (replacing stickers with playing cards respectively), the trailer showed several intriguing gameplay mechanics such as having to use a limited pool of paint in order to use cards, the potential for battles being based on deck-building, and that combat will be closer to a modern card game than anything else. In general, fans are reading between the lines of what they saw, but a more substantial look at the game will probably show a bit more care and thought has been put into the combat than in Sticker Star. Sticker Star was released in 2012, meaning there's been plenty of time for Nintendo to digest the (extremely vocal) fan and critical feedback on the game. Combat is likely to be less pointless this time around, and though it may not be €œclassic€ Paper Mario, it should at least be ironed out so that it has a logic and benefit. Besides, the difference between the first Super Mario 3D World trailer and the second was staggering. One looked surface and dull, the other showed the games true depth and variety. Perhaps something similar is at work here? Expect to see much more of note during E3.
