8 Gameplay Sections That Nearly Killed Amazing Video Games
2. The Majority Of The Game - Brutal Legend
Ahhh Brutal Legend, you cheeky little whippet.
Depending on who you ask, this little nugget from Double Fine is either one that needs to be flushed immediately or is one made of solid gold, and only achieved this split opinion by effectively misselling itself to audiences through a demo released shortly before the full game dropped.
Here in the demo fans got to experience a Metal-infused hack n' slash adventure with Jack Black at the helm, and while it didn't seem to be re-inventing the wheel through its combat, did promise a whole lot more with its album-cover inspired overworld and utterly banging soundtrack. However, upon release, it soon became clear that this wasn't actually the main gameplay element the game was going with.
In fact, this one hack n' slash segment was a one-and-done affair, meaning that its sudden RTS switch-up felt like a con to fans not expecting to have to manage units and protect bases. Now, in all honesty, it wasn't a bad change by any means, however, the demo sold fans an experience they simply weren't getting which lead to a rather sizable backlash from the community which in turn ended up affecting sales and critical opinion.
Therefore the demo section itself nearly killed the rest of the game by providing elements not seen anywhere else.
