8 Great Video Games Remembered For ONE Thing
2. Arrow In The Knee - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
No matter how beloved The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may be, and how many platforms Bethesda ports it to until the heat death of the universe, it always be best associated with one of gaming history's most prevalent memes - "arrow in the knee."
Players regularly encounter guard NPCs throughout the game who will quip variations of the phrase, "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee" - a phrase which amused millions of players enough that it became a viral sensation within days of the game's release.
Quickly people would comment about an unrelated subject before ending with, "...and then I took an arrow in the knee."
The meme was everywhere online in 2011 and 2012, such that it spread far beyond the fandom of the game itself and was adopted by wider Internet users en masse.
The meme's popularity may have faded, but it's still what most will immediately associate with Skyrim.
It'll certainly be interesting to see if Bethesda references it at all in the upcoming The Elder Scrolls VI, or even tries to replicate its success with some more meme-worthy NPC dialogue.
