8 Horror Video Games That Broke The 4th Wall

4. Silent Hill 3

Dead Space 2
Konami

For a franchise that bases a lot of its enemy designs on fears from within the human psyche, it actually makes perfect sense that Silent Hill would attempt to live rent-free in your brain for a bit with a solid fourth wall break or two, and across the franchise, it has indulged in this "delightful" treat a fair few times.

In Downpour, countless references are made to the player's choices in ways which completely mess with your head. For example when you reach the prison and experience another brain-bending flashback, the loading screen drops the pretence of offering the player tips and instead says ominously "was it worth it?"

And in Silent Hill 3 we get a brilliant meta nod to the series itself which comes when Heather, forced to examine a nasty looking toilet, turns to the player and says "who would do something so disgusting?". This little Easter egg can only be found if you still have a save of Silent Hill 2 on your memory card, and references when James performed an equally disgusting moment of amateur plumbing.

Gross.
