8 Horror Video Games That Broke The 4th Wall
2. Pony Island
As with previous entry on this list, Calendula, the fourth wall breaks come so hard and fast with Pony Island that they are mere mounds of dust after a few minutes of gameplay. Positing you as the unlucky player of the 1992 game Pony Island, you must perform rudimentary back end programming in order to actually play the game.
However, as you progress through all of these option checks, resets, and... er... soul deposits you become aware that the title itself is demonically possessed and will not let you stop playing until you have completed it. As the game mentions itself, this experience is "challenging but fair" and will push you to think literally outside of the box in order to get around this satanic security.
Things veer directly into the creepy territory though when the game actively messages you on Steam (if you're playing it through this platform) with made-up accounts to warn you or give information. This suddenly moves from you playing a character to actually being addressed by the game itself. It's funny how this one extra level of interaction makes an otherwise pseudo horror comedy title genuinely terrifying.
