8 Horror Video Games That Broke The 4th Wall
1. Eternal Darkness
Of course Eternal Darkness was going to be on here. How could it not be when the "sanity effects" it showcases are possibly the most memorable thing about this stellar survival horror title?
It was a brave move from Silicon Knights to implement features into Eternal Darkness that would mess with the player as it stands a possibility of falling foul of the "gimmick" term, but the sheer number of ways that this game messes with the player is brilliant and downright terrifying.
Moments like statue heads following you down corridors, or the walls dripping with blood will set your pulse racing, but these are bloody subtle compared to when the game wrests control away from you, muting the tv and in the most extreme case, pretending to delete your saves. That, as a fourth wall break was too far for some.
It's enough to leave you so unnerved that you won't trust anything you're being presented with, which is exactly what the developers intended.
