8 Huge Video Game Announcements That Just Leaked Ahead Of E3 2017

Interestingly, there are two main strands to what Far Cry 5 'is'. Both of which centre around how FC Primal reframed the franchise, opening with an onscreen clock that then went back in time, settling on the Stone Age. It set the tone that Ubisoft could open each game like this, giving their teams carte blanche freedom to apply the 'Far Cry formula' to any time period or setting in history.

As such, the first major rumour is that FC5 is a Wild West game, thanks to the guy who made Far Cry Primal's live-action advert, Jeff Guillot, also working on another ad that showed a spaghetti western setting. He was asked about the project and quoted that it was "a sequel to an existing global franchise".

Certainly sounds like Far Cry.

However, contrasting reports come from GiantBomb, who received an email from their own insider, claiming the complete opposite and stating Far Cry 5 actually takes place in Montana:

"The game will be set in present day, the protagonist is a cop who is trying run down a rebel group who has taken over some ranches and whatnot in the Montana region of the United States. Not 100% if it's Montana, but it's somewhere around there".

Either way, Ubisoft have no Fs left to give after Primal proved they can set a game anywhere and have it 'feel' like Far Cry, so anything's up for grabs. A Wild West setting certainly sounds like the more unique way to go, as a modern day first-person cop story brings back shuddering memories of Battlefield Hardline, though again, we'll have to wait and see.

Which do you think is more plausible?
