No matter how perfect a video game is perceived to be; there will always be at least one gap in the code that allows the player a little more leeway than the developers intended.

Some offer vast improvements to the player's skills or abilities, where others are essential to speedruns, as they cut out sections of travel and irritating cutscenes that only slow you down.

Granted, some glitches do cause some unwanted results such as everyone completely losing their heads in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, or the freakish limb and face-contorting likes of several Assassin's Creed titles, but I'm focusing on the good stuff here.

Obviously, this isn't an extensive list and some of your favourite glitches have probably missed the cut such as a few Super Mario themed ones, Diablo's handy duplicating bug and even tricking your way into playing as Master Hand in Super Smash Bros.

Let me know your favourites in the comments below, as we glance into the past and reminisce over many of the glitches that made us all feel like elite hackers when we first discovered them.

8. Halo 2 - Jumping Onto The Scarab

For those not in the know; Halo 2 opens with the Master Chief landing in the outskirts of New Mombasa, before heading for the city centre to discover the Covenant are using a giant Scarab tank to demolish large parts of the area.

The developers wanted you to run down a high rise catwalk, littered with ammunition and useful weapons, before effectively forcing you onto the Scarab to clear out the Covenant with all guns and grenades utterly blazing the Elites.

What you actually did was a clever jumping sequence before you even reach the catwalk involving frag grenades and a very specific verbal trigger. It isn't easy to do, mainly because of the minute detail in the approach, but you could always run on a little further and jump it from the first part of the catwalk if you missed.

A speed run essential, if ever there was one, and a perfect way to end easily the best part of the game. It all starts to tumble downhill from there.
