8 Reasons Dark Souls Is BETTER Than Sekiro
3. There Are More Surprises
Perhaps by virtue of its story being so weird and the fabric of the world being on the verge of completely coming undone, Dark Souls is full of left-turns that you have no way of seeing coming. It offers so many mysteries to the player that, without a guide, there's no chance you'll be able to figure out everything for yourself. From the Painted World to travelling back to the Undead Asylum, there was always some huge secret for you to uncover that offered new gameplay opportunities.
Granted, Sekiro still has its fair share. The first time a certain boss comes back to life or calls in his friend to help will see you punch the air in satisfaction, but they're never as totally mind blowing as those found in Dark Souls. That game had such a pervasive sense of mystique to it, the idea that you can't trust anything even if you've already played through it once, twice, or ten times before.
Even worse, and yet again, a lot of Sekiro's more imaginative beats recycle those found in other FromSoftware games. A leap of faith revealing a hidden new area, NPC moral choices hiding in plain sight and a mysterious blood disease have all featured in one form or another before.
It's not that they're bad, just that the devs needed to switch things up to really continue to surprise players.
