8 Strangest Examples Of Censorship In Video Games
7. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Unlike most of the entries on this list, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a rare example of a game being censored for the East, rather than the West. Whilst the series has never shied away from graphic or otherwise lewd content, it certainly never pushes the envelope in terms of gratuity or shock value.
Anyone that played the Western release of Peace Walker would be inclined to agree, as the game is generally pretty vanilla in terms of gore. However, when it came time to publish the game in Japan, Snake's torture scene didn't sit too well with Konami.
The scene in question was edited so that Snake is tickled instead of electrocuted in Japan. Kojima himself took to Twitter to explain that this was due to Japan's ratings board taking umbrage with the scene, and that he himself was "disappointed" with their decision.
He went on to explain further, noting that in Japan "the PSP is supported by the younger generation" opposed to in the West, where the PSP primarily attracted a teenage and adult demographic. He further explained that the one scene in question raised Peace Walker from Japan's equivalent of 16+ rating, opposed to the 13+ equivilant rating Konami were hoping for.
