8 Things We Learned From The New Pokémon Sun/Moon Trailer
3. More Rideable Pokémon
Pokémon really do have a pretty dreadful existence, when one stops to think about it. When they're not being employed as tools for violence in glorified hen-fights, the beleaguered creatures are usually toiling away as a manual labourers or pack animals. It's no wonder they prefer to be locked away in Pokéballs.
Unfortunate water Pokémon have long since carried the burden of lazy trainers unable to swim or row a boat, but starting in X and Y, a whole range of land-based 'mon were encumbered with the saddle.
For the most part, these new mounts took the form of set pieces, with one exception: if the player taught Lapras the HM Surf, the placodantic Pokémon would replace the move's regular animation on the overworld.
The Sun and Moon trailer demonstrated a Lapras again being used as a mode of transportation, as well as a Sharpedo (moving akin to a jet-ski), a Tauros, and bizarrely, Stoutland. It seems highly likely, largely thanks to their apparent 'charge' ability, that the latter two are one time deals as in Kalos. The sharpedo, on the other hand, raises the tantalising possibility that more Pokémon have unique animations when taught Surf.
The prospect is all the more exciting when one recalls that Snorlax can learn surf.
