8 Times Video Game Violence Went Too Far This Generation

5. What Remains Of Edith Finch

The violence in What Remains of Edith Finch isn't particularly gory or even that explicit, but it's incredibly unnerving. The entire game is made up of the multiple deaths that have haunted the Finch family, with the demise of each family member being presented through a surreal retelling that embellishes some of the details.

One of the Finch's however was only a newborn when he died as a result of drowning, so when you get to his room late in the game, you know that there isn't going to be a happy ending at the end of his story.

Taking control of the baby as he's left unattended in the bathtub, players are encouraged to play with toys while classical music plays in the background. Seeing the world though the eyes of the child, everything has a sense of whimsy to it, even as the water starts to fill up to an alarming high level.

With the sequence only getting more surreal as the child goes under, the death scene continues to be unnerving precisely because of how idyllic it seems to be on the surface.

It's not explicit and it's definitely more metaphorical than any other entry on this list, but being in control of a stylised version of a baby's drowning certainly leaves a bad taste in your mouth once it's over.
