8 Times Video Game Violence Went Too Far This Generation

2. Paz's Impromptu Surgery In Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes

One of the most controversial scenes in the entire Metal Gear Solid franchise, Paz's surgery at the end of Ground Zeroes is surprisingly grim and harrowing for a series that often revels in comic violence and camp.

After saving her from Camp Omega, Big Boss and the rest of the team begin their escape via helicopter when they're informed that the injured Paz has been surgically implanted with a bomb.

Calling in the medic, Boss decides to cut her open there and then, with the game forcing players to watch as the team rake around in the character's stomach while she screams in agony.

When the punishment is finally over and the bomb has been found though, they're told that a second explosive was also hidden in her body, which then detonates.

The scene would have been horrifying no matter who it was happening to, but the fact that it's the child-like Paz who has to suffer only makes the moment even more uncomfortable.

Not only does she look incredibly young, but she had also been a survivor of sexual abuse, making her one of the most tragic characters in a series built on tragic characters.
