8 Tiny Gameplay Tweaks That Changed EVERYTHING
3. Dashing - DOOM Eternal
I won't lie to you, when I first saw the footage for DOOM Eternal, I was actually worried.
I had feasted on the 2016 reboot to such an extent that my belly was swollen and full of Glory Kill goodness, and in my gluttonous stupor I began to think that it would be impossible to improve on the slick and saucy gravy that made up the combat and therefore would become an inferior game trying to ladle out "more of the same"
Then I played it and boy was I a hungry boy again.
Where DOOM 2016 was a power fantasy, Eternal was an unapologetic sugar rush that sought to turn every encounter into a rollercoaster ride of chained together attacks and viscera-filled visuals. And the move that created this "Tony Hawks With A Gun" experience? Well, it was none other than the simple dash mechanic.
This tiny change dropped like a bomb and exploded preconceptions about how combat could be approached, as now, with greater movement options at your disposal, you could dive in and dip out of combat on a whim, meaning you were always in a state of attack, always moving from target to target and dipping out when the forced of Hell began to toast your buns.
Eternal taught you, with this one move, to never, ever stop kicking ass, and that is something I can truly get behind.
