8 Video Game Enemies That Are Secretly Friends

These video game adversaries are really good buds deep down.

What would any video game be without a card-carrying Big Bad for the player to take out?

This is more often than not the primary objective of most games - to reach the end and throw down with the overarching villain, defeating them and saving the land, right?

But not all video game baddies are quite such simple and straight-forward creations - sometimes they're a little more complex than that, to the extent that to call them mere villains is actually a little reductive, if not flat-out incorrect.

These video game villains and enemies, then, while opposed to the player and their goals on a superficial level, were actually a friend, even an ally, once the full extent of the story was laid bare.

Though it wasn't made clear upfront, ultimately these video game characters all had considerably cosier relationships with the hero than they first appeared to, whether by way of timey-wimey logic or because they just had so much fun messing with them.

Whatever the reason, these video game enemies were actually our pals deep down, whether we actually wanted to admit it or not...

8. Kessler - Infamous

Kessler from Infamous is a very special case indeed - a shadowy antagonist who directly opposes protagonist Cole, and yet is ultimately revealed to be a secret hero in the most literal sense imaginable.

Infamous' big, climactic twist is that Kessler is Cole - or to be more precise, Kessler is another version of Cole from an alternate future.

In this future, Cole failed to prevent a malevolent force called The Beast from destroying humanity, including Cole's own family.

And so, in a last ditch effort to make things right, he sent himself back in time and took up the villainous mantle of Kessler in order to ensure that present day Cole would be prepared to battle The Beast when he later arrived.

Granted, Kessler carries out some genuinely heinous, arguably unforgiveable acts in an attempt to train Cole for what's coming, but at the same time, can he really be an enemy when he's just another version of Cole, the hero? Talk about a noodle-baker alright.
