8 Video Game Fan Theories So GOOD They Became Real

Ever since the first Mass Effect, there's been a theory among fans that the earthborn iteration of protagonist Commander Shepard is actually Canadian. 

This stems primarily from one fact - both the male and female voice actors for Shepard throughout the series, Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, hail from Canada.

Now, while BioWare have never technically confirmed this beyond any doubt, they did provide an extremely amusing hint to earthborn Shepard's heritage in Mass Effect 3.

For those who play through the series as the female version of Shepard and decide to romance Samantha Traynor, the pair will share a conversation where Shep extolls the romantic virtues of Vancouver, all while Samantha is baffled that she didn't namedrop a more traditionally sexy city like Paris or Venice.

Shep defends her choice, adding that Vancouver is a "lovely city," which seems like nothing if not a wink-wink hint that Shepard loves Vancouver so much because she is in fact Canadian.

Considering that developer BioWare is itself based in Canada - Edmonton, to be precise - and sci-fi games aren't exactly overflowing with Canadian protagonists, it all tracks.
