8 Video Game Moments Designed To Troll You

3. The Pendant - Dark Souls

Dark Souls Pendant
Bandai Namco Entertainment

I'm pretty sure if you look hard enough at any front cover for any game developed by From Software you'll see the words "look behind you" and when you do, find nothing and then turn back to the game case once again there'll be a middle finger with a new tagline of "lol"

Such is the trollish nature of Miyazaki and his team who have routinely had our trousers down over the years thanks to doors that lead to instant death, floors that fall out from under you for no reason, a tonne of bosses that just take a dump over your expectations and of course, the pendant. An item with literally no purpose other than to troll players.

In the character creation screen of Dark Souls 1, the player is offered an array of starting gifts, many of which are extremely useful for certain builds and speed runs. However, of all of them, the pendant sticks out for its sheer.....strangeness.

The pendants item description lists it as having "no effect" but because we are conditioned to think that this is a ruse and because Miyazaki himself said in an interview that it's the gift he would personally choose (the scamp), many players selected it anyway, assuring themselves that such a decision would pay off somehow.

Yet the only thing unlocked here was the not-so-subtle laughter of the dev team at your expense, for it was all just a prank and the pendant provided no tangible benefit at all.

You could trade it away for sure, but aside from cashing in a token that reads "I am a mug" there was little else the pendant provided.

Jules Gill hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
