8 Video Game Mysteries Developers Had To Solve

2. Bigfoot - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Ever since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas hit stores in October 2004, fans have doggedly been seeking out the game's single-most infamous mystery - Bigfoot himself.

There have been murmurs for the better part of 20 years that Bigfoot was coded into the game by Rockstar and could be found in the San Andreas countryside - especially the Mount Chiliad area.

Fans threw themselves into the challenge of combing every last pixel of the game's map in pursuit of the enigmatic cryptid, with some enterprising enthusiasts even creating their own hoax "sightings" through mods, which in turn only further heightened the intrigue and desperation.

And you can't really blame players - San Andreas contains a number of references to Bigfoot which would indeed suggest there was a way for players to encounter the creature.

And yet, Rockstar themselves plainly put the matter to bed a long time ago - like, around a year after the game was released. The company's co-founder Terry Donovan said in a 2005 interview, "There is no Bigfoot, just like in real life."

Given that there wasn't a single facetious or playful note about Donovan's remark, that really should've been the end of the matter, but to players en masse the official resolution didn't much matter.

The thrill of chasing this elusive digital mystery was far more alluring than the reality that it was actually total bunkum.
