Video game film adaptations get a bad rep.

Hollywood has an unfortunate pattern of not knowing how to translate material found in a revered IP into a motion picture. From countless Resident Evil sequels that were mediocre at best, to the abominable duology that was Mortal Kombat in the 1990s, it's questionable as to why other video games have been glossed over in favour of these disasters.

As a very memorable Far Cry villain once paraphrased, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting things to change. In terms of successfully translating a good story from a video game to a good film, this sentiment has applied for the worse. This shouldn't be the case. Not only are there plenty of games ripe for adapting, there is potential for them to be very successful.

Only look to the 2000s for a fantastic selection of celebrated, as well as underrated, video games that are ripe for the picking. By mirroring certain, successful film elements from other properties, they could experience mainstream success not unlike The Witcher Netflix series.

With fantastical settings and characters, along with some boundary-pushing direction and plot elements, we may one day find ourselves revisiting these distinct IPs through a film adaptation...

8. Soulcalibur II

With medieval-inspired settings, coupled with fascinating character backstories found in successful adaptations such as The Witcher, it's about time Soulcalibur was given the same film treatment.

Although the original Soulcalibur was widely adored by all, its immediate sequel thoroughly built on that foundation. Characters were fleshed out more, and the main story surrounding the influence, and subsequent fragmentation, of Soul Edge was given more emphasis. Taking this major plot point into consideration, a film adaptation can potentially showcase this with maximized efficiency.

It's simple, really. Build the story in the vein of Game of Thrones, where different characters from unique backgrounds vie for Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, each for their own reasons, nefarious or not. Although these weapons may be the end goal, the character's story arcs in between can be the focal point for audiences, similar to Daenerys' rise from exiled princess to Targaryen conqueror.

The main story arc can portray Siegfried Schtauffen first as an arrogant and selfish protagonist, having slaughtered thousands as his evil opposite in Nightmare when he acquired Soul Edge, and then trying to find redemption after he is freed from the weapon's control.

If proven to be successful, this entry could be the first in the 1590 A.D. trilogy to be adapted into a mainstream film series. Audiences love a good redemption story, and Soulcalibur II could be the next big favourite.
