Fusing two genres to create a good story is challenging enough.

Darkwatch manages to amalgamate three, and surprisingly defy expectations at the same time. The game is part Western, part steampunk, and part horror, and has a story that developers themselves said was influenced by the likes of Blade and Men In Black, in the Old West.

It may sound campy to some, but the seeds have been planted here for Darkwatch to succeed as a big-budget film. Jericho Cross is depicted as a societal outcast and drifter, who ends up doing the proverbial 'one last job' only to be drafted by the eponymous Darkwatch to fight an evil he himself released. Western tropes and themes often feature a hero being done wrong by an antagonist, subsequently having to plot their revenge or save the society they originally loathed.

Using both of these ideas, and having Jericho Cross mirror Clint Eastwood's Walt Kowalski character from Gran Torino (which, in and of itself, is a spin on the traditional Western movie) and you have the grounds for a pretty special and unique film.

The Western genre generally allows audiences to connect with and root for a character, once they have abandoned their nomadic lifestyle, and found their reason for fighting the good fight. Cross' fate in a film could potentially end in death, but he can save the world and have his legacy spoken about by us in celebration.
