7. Catcher Chocobo - Final Fantasy X

Sonic the Hedgehog Labyrinth Zone
Square Enix

There's a special place in Hell for whoever came up with Final Fantasy X's chocobo racing mini-game - especially the last of the lot, "Catcher chocobo."

You're required to race a chocobo trainer, and if you want to unlock the ultra-useful Sun Sigil, you'll have to beat his par time of... zero seconds.

Y'see, the course is populated with red balloons which, when popped, will wipe three seconds off your time each, and so, you have to hit enough of them to eliminate your entire time spent racing. Couple that with the need to avoid incoming flocks of birds, each of which will add three seconds to your time, and this is an absolutely sanity-eroding test of the player's willingness for self-flagellation.

There's so much RNG involved with the balloons and birds that you'll really, really want to get the Sun Sigil, which can be used to upgrade Tidus' Ultimate Weapon, the Caladbolg.

If you thought the chocobo stealth missions in the recent Final Fantasy VII Rebirth were a load of time-wasting nonsense, they seem positively trivial compared to this.
