9 Disastrous Mistakes That Killed Star Wars Battlefront 2
6. Revealing That Only 35% Of Players Buy Microtransactions
Though the information relates to FIFA's Ultimate Team mode (where card packs determine which players, attributes, formations etc. you can unlock and equip), startlingly, only 35% of that game's ENTIRE PLAYERBASE partake in microtransactions.
See, there's a term in the games industry called a "Whale". Known as a player with an exorbitant amount of disposable income - your lawyers, doctors, business owners etc. who can afford to blow/waste endless extra cash (sometimes to the tune of 1000s of pounds/dollars) - it's this demographic that's become increasingly focused on over the years. Especially at EA.
Thus, it's not a stretch to say that cumulatively, this lot are the 35%, yet you have to wonder why on earth EA are designing multiple games around mechanics that only a minority of their playerbase can engage with. I mean, the reason is pure money, as that 35% pay far more than the majority's one-off purchases combined, but it still means more players put up with obfuscating structures and mechanics than they should.
