9 Scariest Moments In Non-Horror Video Games

8. The Flood Helmet Recording - Halo: Combat Evolved

The perfect candidate for a game you forgot handled horror supremely well, the original Halo's slow introduction of the menacing "Flood" predated the first-person horror boom by a full decade.

Obviously Bungie's work was firmly routed in being a first-person shooter, but descending down into ancient alien ruins and finding the helmet of a deceased soldier was the perfect way to show you their last moments alive.

Also predating the "found footage genre" across the 2000s, Bungie show you a select few memories of one Private Jenkins, as they too arrived above the Silent Cartographer, to see what lurked below.

The genius here came from just how ambitious the team were. Remember this was 2001 - the sky was the limit in regards to representing filmic techniques like a jump-scare or found recording in video games. As Bungie take their time, you know something has to come along and kill Jenkins and the crew.

Eventually - glimpsed through a doorway before a full attack all but wipes out the squad - we see The Flood pour into the room, swarming the UNSC and taking out Jenkins. Coming back to the modern day as Master Chief, you've just been introduced to one of Halo's most iconic enemies.
