9 Times Critics Ignored INCREDIBLE Video Games

1. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Let us preface this by saying this game is not fun, it's kind of not supposed to be. Is it enjoyable? Arguably, yes. But much like the condition that the main character is suffering from throughout the game, the first Hellblade game is gruesome, unpleasant, and at times downright unsettling.

Of course, that's kind of the point. A lot of reviews of the game, when it first came out in 2017, did offer praise of how developers Ninja Theory depicted Senua's psychosis. And yes that's right - always remember this game was made by the same folks who did the Devil May Cry reboot that also had a severe disconnect between critic scores and audience reviews.

Though the game received praise upon its release - mostly for how it portrayed mental illness, it also got a lot of vitriol for the same thing. It received a lot of negative points for its repetitive enemy types and puzzles. But really, Hellblade is fantastic.

Like Max Payne 3, people look back more fondly on it today, making it into a cult hit, but at the time many reviewers would have binned it if not for the plot.
