9 Disastrous Video Games That Totally Killed Their Consoles

7. SNES - Shaq Fu (1994)

Let€™s all just take a second to remember that this actually existed. Shaq Fu, a fighting game starring basketball legend Shaquille O€™Neal, appeared on the SNES the year before production ceased on the console and, despite early interest in the project, it felt very much like going through the motions as the next generation of games consoles were being lined up. The game€™s story has O€™Neal heading to Japan to take part in a charity basketball match, though he decides to pop into a dojo along the way. Big mistake, Shaq. After a pep talk from martial arts master Leotsu, Shaq is talked into transporting himself to another dimension where his task is to save a young boy from the clutches of an evil mummy. I guess the charity event could wait. On top of a ludicrous premise, SNES gamers were stung when Sega announced that their version for the Mega Drive/Genesis would have five more playable characters and an additional three levels. Both versions suffered from the same awful controls, however, with a jump button so sensitive that you seemed to spend half of the fights just hanging in the air, running the clock down. Though reviews at the time were largely negative and heralded the beginning of the end for the SNES, criticism over time has only intensified, with one website created with the sole purpose of finding and destroying as many copies of the game as possible. I wish them well.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
