9 Disastrous Video Games That Totally Killed Their Consoles

6. PS1 - Hugo: Black Diamond Fever (2001)

PS1 lovers, remember Hugo? Of course you don€™t, you were too busy raiding tombs and looking forward to the PS2. Hugo was a troll who appeared across a flood of games as the first PlayStation began to enter the winter of its life, and this 3D platformer was the last and most appalling of the lot. With the evil witch Scylla back and on the war path, Hugo must stop her from getting her warty little mitts on some rare black diamonds that will give her inexplicable power and hand her the keys to world domination. Luckily for the Kikurians (who have been turned into slave diamond miners) Hugo isn€™t about to take this lying down. Developed by ITE Media and published by Electronic Arts, this forgettable borefest is something of a poor man€™s Crash Bandicoot. Putting aside the minimal sound effects and unimaginative levels that all just blur into one, this game failed to make use of the 3D environment it marketed itself on, giving Hugo a tiny whip as his weapon that made it frustratingly hard to attack enemies and move freely at the same time. To add to the misery, the controls are so damn slippery that at times it feels as though you€™re controlling a wet bar of soap rather than a vigilante troll. Whilst later versions of the same game were relatively well received on the PC and the Gameboy, GameZone scored the Playstation version at 2.8 out of 10 - a generous 2.8 at that, for a game that left us crying out for the next generation to arrive sooner.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
