Updated: As suspected, there are many reports saying this threat is fake. Claimed to be the very first internet-based super consciousness, the global hacking group that call themselves Anonymous have threatened to attack multiple servers as a result of the FBI taking down popular sharing site, Megaupload. Anonymous have already shut down websites such as the US Department of Justice and Universal Music Group and they claim if their demands aren't met within 72 hours they will also strike - The UN, Xbox Live, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, US Bank and Captial Bank. Though many are skeptical over the claims as Youtube, owned by Google, are obviously against SOPA otherwise they couldn't possibly exist. You can see the video of the threat below; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LlaF2AoL-o&feature=player_embedded Employees of Megaupload, a Hong-Kong based company that offers a one-click hosting service that has become a haven for Internet pirates, were arrested on Thursday January 19th, 2012 and their website shut down over an investigation into alleged copyright infringement. This comes in the same week that extremely popular websites such as Wikipedia and Reddit enforced a 24 hour black-out against Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa), two new pieces of legislation that is aimed at shutting down file-sharing websites such as Megaupload. Megaupload originated its service in 2005 and offers a very similar service to Rapidshare, Filesonic, Megashares, Mediafire and others who are still running. They have already vowed to fight back against their arrest/shutting down, their lawyer Ira Rothken quoted as saying; The company is looking at its legal options for getting back its servers and its domain and getting its servers back up online. Megaupload will vigorously defend itself. It is really offensive to say that just because people can upload bad things, therefore Megaupload is automatically responsible. How seriously Microsoft (and the others) are taking the Anonymous threat is unknown but I guess if the serves go down after the weekend, you know why.
