Assassin's Creed: 10 Reasons Why Syndicate Is The Most Underrated Ever
1. The Twins
When it comes to the heroes of Assassin's Creed games Ubisoft have sometimes struggled to recapture the appeal of fan favourite Florentine charmer Ezio. Syndicate has a unique and enjoyable solution: twin protagonists.
Twins Jacob and Evie Frye are both highly trained assassins seeking to free London from the Templars, but each has a different personality and a different resultant way of achieving that aim.
Swaggering cocksure Jacob destroys London's Templar infrastructure through a combination of building up his own street gang and judicious use of fire and explosions. Meanwhile, the more thoughtful and focused Evie hunts for the latest magical artefact left behind by the precursor civilisation (along with occasionally mopping up her twin brother's messes).
The twin setup means that the player gets to switch back and forth between different styles of mission and different approaches to playing the game. Levelling up each twin also gives each abilities that the other can't possess. So, as you upgrade the characters' skillsets you can make Jacob more efficiently brutal and Evie so stealthy she can basically turn invisible.
No other game in the series, before or since, offers that same level of clearly defined separate hero characters with their own distinct abilities. In Odyssey it doesn't really matter whether you play Kassandra or Alexios, both can essentially develop the same personality and potential skills.
There are benefits and pitfalls to Assassin's Creed going down an increasingly customisable RPG path as the series goes on, but it's an approach that means we probably won't see another game with a pair of distinctly characterised heroes to bounce off each other like Jacob and Evie. And that's why returning with them to London will always remain appealing.
