Banjo-Kazooie: Ranking Every Level From Worst To Best
3. Mad Monster Mansion
Mad Monster Mansion is a delight to play from start to finish. Accompanied by a surprisingly-upbeat theme song, this level features some of the game's most inventive Jiggy missions as well as some of its most humorous bits. One example that conflates the two sees Kazooie pooping eggs into various flower pots scattered around a church. When the player pulls it off successfully, the pot ekes out an eerie, "thaaaaaaaaank yoooooooou" (which, apparently, Nintendo executives initially misheard as something far more obscene).
In another instance of hilarity, Mumbo Jumbo transforms Banjo into a pumpkin in this level. Not a black cat, not a ghost, not any other "spoopy" cliché - a pumpkin. Despite being effectively functionally useless, this transformation allows Banjo to enter small spaces to collect previously-inaccessible items. Plus, it's just funny to bounce around the level as a f***ing pumpkin.
Other charming bits include the Jiggy mission where you have to sneak through the mansion to bypass a sleeping ghost, a minigame where you have to mimic the notes that a ghost hand plays on a giant piano, and of course, that part where you enter the second floor as Pumpkin Banjo and flush yourself down a toilet that speaks in farts.
Okay, that last one is sophomoric, but c'mon, have a little fun will'ya?
