Batman: Arkham Knight Reviews - 10 Early Critical Reactions You Need To See

4. The Sheer Size Of Gotham City Easily Dwarfs The Previous Games

"This is arguably the most dense and perfect open-world city ever built. It€™s commanding in its sheer scale for the basic square kilometers of it all..." - Steve Farrelly, AusGamers.com "In size, Gotham feels like three Arkham Cities put together - a trifecta of distinctive (if not sprawling) environments all built with the Batmobile€™s capabilities in mind." - Sam Roberts, GamesRadar.com
With Arkham City, Rocksteady took Batman from the confines of the madhouse and plopped the Caped Crusader smack in the middle of a teeming Gotham City, albeit one confined by the machinations of Hugo Strange. Given the fairly restrictive environs of the preceding title, the shift was a radical one, but it was a change that was definitely welcomed as the open-world feel of Arkham City resulted in a game stuffed to the brim with hidden little nuggets of content. But when you've created a game world as detailed and dense of Arkham City's, how do you top that moving forward? Well, for starters: you go bigger. And boy, did the guys at Rocksteady outdo themselves here - according to several critics, Arkham Knight's sprawling open-world is five times the size of it's predecessor's and spans a total of three islands, each with their own distinctive look and feel. And what's more is the fact that Rocksteady have reportedly struck the perfect balance between Asylum's compact environments and the sequel's vast landscape - with skyscrapers and parking garages serving as predator segments amid the chaos.
