Bioshock's 10 Best Moments
2. Welcome To Rapture - Bioshock
Is this the most iconic opening to a video game? It's certainly a contender! The beauty of this opening is the gradual pacing as Rapture and its ideology are slowly introduced.
It begins with you on a plane, a voiceover plays about you being special, then the plane crashes and you are stranded in the ocean. This is where you take control as you swim towards a mysterious tower in the middle of the sea, the plane slowly sinking behind you and passengers' screams echoing in your ears.
You are confronted by a huge looming statue of Andrew Ryan and a banner that reads "No Gods Or Kings. Only Man". It's confusing at first, but then you enter a bathysphere and are presented with a video introducing Rapture.
In a few short minutes you meet Andrew Ryan as he explains his vision for an underwater utopia that sought to reward people with drive, determination, and vision. It sets the scene perfectly and as Ryan utters the word "Rapture", the screen is pulled back to reveal the underwater metropolis in all its glory.
It's a fantastic opening and immediately makes you eager to explore Ryan's fallen paradise.
