Bioshock's 10 Best Moments
3. Infinite Universes - Bioshock Infinite
Ken Levine must have been delighted with the critical and audience reaction to Bioshock, receiving almost universal acclaim for its incredible premise, location, story, and an absolutely mind blowing plot twist. Yet, there may have been a small part of him that was unsure of how to follow it up.
As M. Night Shymalan is no doubt aware, a great plot twist can place unnecessary pressure to go even further in the next instalment. It's fair to say that Levine may have felt this pressure, but he delivered nonetheless. For as ambitious and mind blowing as Bioshock's twist was, Infinite's is one that will leave you scratching your head and pondering the meaning of your own existence!
The main premise of Infinite follows you, Booker, as you are tasked with finding a woman called Elizabeth, rescuing her from a tyrant known as Comstock and bringing her back with you. It's as deceptively simple as the premise for the first Bioshock and soon becomes clear that there is a lot more at play.
Fast forward to the end, and it turns out that Comstock is a version of you, Booker, from a parallel universe. Not only that, but there are an infinite number of universes, all of which contains variations on Booker and Elizabeth. Not only is it an incredibly ambitious narrative for a video game, it rewards repeat playthroughs unlike any other game and also allows for a brief but very welcome return to Rapture.
