I first noticed just how much care and attention was being put into character models and faces with Advanced Warfare's cutscenes, but that "photo-real" approach now extends to everything else.

Smoke effects, lighting, exemplary use of HDR and various particle effects are used to expertly add to the tension or engagement of the scene at hand. The campaign in particular has a host of levels only lit by oil drum fires, muzzle flashes and strobe lights - all bringing this fictional take on real-world history to life.

Multiplayer might sacrifice a lot of the bells and whistles for frame rate and performance, but this is a robust package from top to bottom.
