Hands-down the biggest change in the new Crash games is the angle of Crash's arc through the air after jumping. The distance you can travel remains the same, but unlike the Naughty Dog originals, letting go of X means you'll immediately drop straight down.

In the 1996, 97 and 98 originals you'd still carry forward just enough to make the majority of jumps thanks to Naughty Dog allowing for a sense of momentum to remain as you're travelling through the air - hence falling straight down pits if you don't hold X until you're back on solid ground.

Knowing that this isn't the case anymore will solve the majority of problems where players find themselves needlessly falling into pits, as 2017 Crash CAN do everything his former self could - you just need to hold X.
