"Instead of simply making levels easier, Vicarious Visions has found a great yet small compromise. Continually fail a platforming section and a checkpoint crate will appear earlier than expected. Similarly, if you’re getting pulverised by the same boss or enemies, you’ll start spawning with an Aku Aku power-up. Without fundamentally changing the game, these little boosts help those that just want to beat the trilogy instead of mastering it." - The Sixth Axis
"Vicarious does include some needed quality of life tweaks like box counters and time trials that make for a more fleshed out experience...Hints Vicarious Visions has added to loading screens never feel like a cheat but instead a simple gesture toward more obscure aspects, like death routes or colored gems, that makes them more understandable." - IGN

Vicarious has included a number of little fixes that make the first game a great deal less frustrating, though, with an overhauled checkpoint and save system that's a significant improvement over the controller-smashingly annoying equivalent in the original version.

The developer has managed to implement these features without the end product feeling dumbed down or holding the player's hand too much. Crash 1 is still no picnic, but it doesn't feel as cheap this time.
