2. Transistor

As the follow up to smash hit indie darling Bastion, Transistor had big shoes to fill.

Rather than build upon Bastion’s critically acclaimed frenetic real-time combat system, Transistor instead blended real-time combat with an option to pause the action so the player can plan out strategies and queue up attacks before unfreezing time and unleashing a string of devastating attacks.

A diverse set of powers and abilities can be combined to create powerful new synergies. One of Transistor’s neatest tricks is that upon death the player's most used ability will be unavailable for the next few battles. This sounds potentially frustrating, but it forces players to experiment with all the tools at their disposal and you’ll likely find a setup which works as well - or even better.

The game world is painted in a beautiful cel-shaded style, ensuring it still looks fantastic six years after release.

The game’s heroine, Red, wakes one day in a deserted futuristic metropolis with no memory of what transpired beforehand and is quickly beset upon by enemies named The Process; a vast army of malevolent robots that are destroying the city, piece by piece.
